Embury's History
Embury United Methodist Church was organized in 1856 as the Independence Methodist Church and was located on Ward Rd. Although the exact date of the construction for the present church building is not known, records indicate that land, including Embury Chapel and the Graveyard in the rear, was given to the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1868. Now, approximately 150 years later, the same church stands at 2060 Locke-Cuba Rd.
In 1978 a parsonage was built and shortly thereafter the sanctuary was remodeled. A paved parking lot became a reality in 1981, and 1985 saw the dedication of the spacious Educational building located in the rear of the sanctuary. The following year brought the addition of beautiful, custom-designed, stained-glass windows, and the mid-nineties saw the addition of a children's playground and a fitness walking trail.
Embury's Present
God is continually blessing Embury Church. Just recently we have heard
back about a grant application and we have been awarded $50,000.00.
Although our request was larger, we know that God doesn't give more
than we can handle and less than what we need. Hopefully these funds
will enable us to purchase a new church van and bring us a little
closer towards or goal of building a Family Life Center.
Embury's Future
Many wonderful challenges are facing Embury Church and the future
is exciting. New mission programs as well as expanded ministries with
children, youth, and adults continue to be added. A new computerized
projection system for enhancing all worship services is a short-term
goal, while long-range plans call for a Family Life Center with additional
restrooms, Sunday School space, and a gym. Supplementary plans include
the addition of office space and a new choir room. As you can see,
Embury's future looks very bright.
